What is magnesium malate? To be more specific, it is dimagnesium malate since it comprises one molecule of malic acid bound to two molecules of magnesium. Involved in many of the body’s functions and present in certain foods and dietary supplements, these molecules are combined in magnesium malate to produce a patented form with high bioavailability – it is well absorbed during digestion and well assimilated by the body. Unlike some other forms of magnesium, it does not react with gastric acids, and so does not upset the digestive system.
What does magnesium malate do? Known as an effective remedy for constipation, magnesium malate is also an excellent chelator of aluminium, a metal that may be present in the body at toxic levels. By exchanging its magnesium for aluminium, magnesium malate eliminates aluminium from the body while making the magnesium available for use by the body for various functions such as relaxing the muscles, clotting the blood and producing ATP, the body’s principal energy molecule. The magnesium provided by magnesium malate is all the more beneficial since magnesium deficiency is by no means uncommon. It can manifest in feelings of stress, sleep problems, muscle pain, etc. In a similar way to magnesium, malic acid is also involved in the body’s energy production processes.
As a result of the benefits of magnesium and malic acid, the various effects of magnesium malate are still being investigated in a number of research studies. Some scientists, for example, believe it offers benefits in reducing pain, sensitivity and depression in those suffering from fibromyalgia, a syndrome characterised by widespread pain throughout the body.
