- Slows down age-related decline in brain capacity.
- Protects the hippocampus region associated with memory and learning.
- Helps to inhibit the formation of the neuro-toxic aggregates.
Known scientifically as 3-amino-1-propanesulfonic acid, homotaurine is an organic molecule found in certain marine algae. Though chemically similar to taurine, it has different properties. Taurine is popular in sports nutrition, while homotaurine offers benefits in brain nutrition. This is due to its similarities with gamma-amino-butyric acid (GABA), the body’s principal inhibitory neurotransmitter. Homotaurine is said to have GABAergic activity - in other words, it has a number of GABA-like effects. In particular, it has neuroprotective, anticonvulsant and sedative properties which explain its benefits in slowing down the decline of brain and cognitive functions.
Like its close counterpart GABA, homotaurine has been widely-studied for its neuroprotective effects. Research suggests it acts in a specific area of the brain called the hippocampus, the site of memory function and learning, and an essential structure for brain activity. In the hippocampus, homotaurine appears to bind to soluble beta-amyloid proteins. These molecules have a tendency to form neurotoxic plaques, leading to dysfunction and destruction of brain cells. Evidence suggests that homotaurine maintains cognitive health by preventing aggregation of these beta-amyloid proteins in the hippocampus.
Because of its neuroprotective action, homotaurine is often associated with an anti-ageing effect. Indeed, it maintains integrity of brain cells, helping to prevent cerebral degeneration and combatting cognitive decline. This preventive, protective effect has been demonstrated in several clinical trials which show that supplementing with homotaurine may, in particular, help to maintain the ability to memorise, reduce memory loss, and support attention and concentration. As such, homotaurine merits serious consideration in the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease.
The many studies conducted on homotaurine suggest it acts as a neuroprotector. Its GABAergic effect helps maintain brain activity and fight the decline in cerebral and cognitive function. In order to offer a high quality supplement, free from side-effects, this product is delivered in capsules, each containing 50g of homotaurine, with a suggested dose of two capsules a day. For optimal efficacy, one capsule should be taken with food in the morning and evening. Other products may also be of interest for preventing cerebral degeneration and maintaining cognitive ability. Neurex™, for example, is a powerful neuroprotective supplement, while our new formulation, Neuro-Nutrition Formula, helps protect the brain against the effects of ageing.
